Happy New Year! We ended off the year discussing holiday's around the world. We talked about holiday traditions and we started one as a classroom...the famous "Elf on the Shelf" tradition began in our classroom on December 1st. The children enjoyed showing the elf how well behaved they could be so the elf would have good reports back to Santa! We learned that a holiday tradition in Europe is for children to leave their shoes out. The children's shoes get filled with small gifts, until "Sinterklaas" day when they receive bigger gifts in a sack by the door. We expanded on this lesson by having the children trace their own shoes and then cut them out of paper. The children looked through magazines and picked out the different toys they wanted to glue to their shoes. After finishing we taped the shoes on our classroom door and left a little note next to them explaining what we had learned! The children enjoyed showing their parents that afternoon at pick-up!
Our favorite gift at school is our new classroom! It is still undecided whether the children or the teachers are the most excited about this :) We have some new centers which includes computer and sensory table! Our housekeeping center has expanded and we now have a tool bench to add to it! We are so happy with our new space and although it is a work in progress---with much more to come---we love it already!
